Celebrating 175 Years of Community Spirit: St. Joseph Children's Home Picnic Returns with New Offerings

The St. Joseph Children's Home has been hosting an annual fundraising picnic for nearly two centuries, and this year's event promises to be a special celebration of the community's enduring support. Suzy Hillebrand, the chief advancement officer for St. Joe's, reveals the secret behind the picnic's longevity and the exciting new additions that will make this year's celebration even more memorable.

Bringing Families Together for Generations

A Cherished Tradition Rooted in Community

The St. Joseph Children's Home picnic has been a beloved tradition in the community for generations, with the event's enduring appeal stemming from its ability to bring people together. "It is our community," Hillebrand explains. "We've talked about it over and over again. The community supports by either coming to play the games." From the classic carnival games and live music to the irresistible food offerings, the picnic has become a cherished annual gathering that celebrates the spirit of the local community.

Evolving to Meet the Needs of Modern Families

While the picnic's core elements have remained consistent over the years, the organizers have made a concerted effort to introduce new features that cater to the changing needs of families. One such addition is the Infant Tent, sponsored by Kosair for Kids, which provides a quiet and comfortable space for parents to tend to their little ones. "Moms and dads can take a minute, rock the baby, nurse, and just get out of the chaos of the 50,000 people that come to the picnic," Hillebrand says, highlighting the event's commitment to supporting the needs of modern families.

Honoring the Picnic's Storied Past

As the St. Joseph Children's Home picnic celebrates its 175th anniversary, the organizers have created a special offering that pays homage to the event's rich history. "Another thing is our 175th Chicken Dinner for .75," Hillebrand reveals. "It's a special chicken dinner ticket. You can't get it online; you can only get it here on campus." This nostalgic nod to the picnic's past is sure to delight attendees and create a sense of connection to the event's enduring legacy.

Maintaining a Safe and Welcoming Environment

In addition to the new offerings, the organizers have also implemented a curfew policy to ensure the safety and well-being of all attendees. "After 8 p.m., anyone 17 years old and younger must be within 'arms reach' of an adult or must leave the picnic," Hillebrand explains. This measure, combined with the event's family-friendly atmosphere, underscores the organizers' commitment to creating a secure and inclusive environment for the community to gather and celebrate.

A Celebration of Community, Tradition, and Giving Back

The St. Joseph Children's Home picnic is more than just a fun-filled event; it is a testament to the power of community and the enduring spirit of giving. By blending cherished traditions with innovative new offerings, the organizers have ensured that this year's celebration will be a truly special and memorable experience for all who attend. As the picnic continues to evolve, it remains a shining example of how a community can come together to support a worthy cause and create lasting memories that will be passed down for generations to come.
